SPIRIT - TIME CIRCLE (1968 – 1972)/CLEAR/FEEDBACK 5TH MAY 2008
SPV’s Yellow label release three albums from U.S band Spirit. Fans of American rock will be familiar with the name Spirit and many may well be able to name their leading light, guitarist Randy California. Although they enjoyed a U.S Top 30 hit single in 1969 with I Got A Line On You, Spirit were much of their time in being an ‘albums band’, an act that used the broader canvas of 12-inch vinyl to create moods and sometimes even song suites that ranged far beyond a three-minute 45”.
TIME CIRCLE (1968-1972) Time Circle covers the band’s most fertile period from 1968, when their eponymous first album was released to 1970’s 12 Dreams of Dr Sardonicus (a final track from the long unreleased Potatoland sessions extends the period to 1972). This 2-CD set features four bonus tracks, including Space Child from the Potatoland sessions.
CLEAR Clear is very much an album of two halves. The first consists of numbers that, with their time changes, mellow keyboards and psychedelic lead guitar, would have been very much expected by their fans but John Locke’s jazzy, electric piano-playing on Clear hints at Steely Dan who ‘crossed over’ with a similar sound just a few short years later. Four bonus tracks are included here.
FEEDBACK Released in February 1972, three months after its completion, the music on Feedback was quite different to anything Spirit fans had encountered before. Minus the original singer Jay Ferguson, bassist Mark Andes and Randy California who was recovering from a horse-riding injury, the album featured the singer/bassist Al Staehely and his guitarist brother Christian alongside band originals, John Locke on keyboards and Ed ‘Cass’ Cassidy on Drums.
